Our community mentoring approach is drawing high praise from many directions. With our core, three-program approach, boys are finding ways to connect to the good men of BTMT, having fun, and benefiting from their involvement. Parents are seeing positive changes in their sons and appreciating our work too. School principals, administrators and teachers are excited about our school-based groups. They are realizing what the research has indicated, our groups improve academic performance, attendance, and demeanor of boys, while reducing discipline issues, expulsions, and dropout rates.
“I wish that all our middle and high schools had boys to men circles. What a huge difference a few, caring mentors can make in the life of a teenaged boy.”
– Former Superintendent of TUSD, H.T. Sanchez
While we are developing multiple methods to evaluate the impact of our programs, no surveys, statistics or words can ever capture the remarkable positive changes our mentors and staff see in boys on a weekly basis.
What We Do
Since March 2009, our work has been to invite, encourage, background screen, train, and then support men to become volunteer group mentors. When ready, they step into our various programs and the important work of supporting and encouraging boys on their journey toward a positive manhood.
Our programs and services include:
School-Based Mentoring (SBM) – In our weekly, facilitated school groups, men help boys develop their general social skills, and improve their ability and willingness to work with peers. Along the way they gradually build their self-esteem, improve their ability to manage anger and conflict, improve their academic performance, lower their frequency of school absenteeism, and increase their understanding of the consequences of their personal decisions. Adventure Outings (AO) – Our adventure outings are a monthly series of fun, educational, and motivational experiences. They take place both in the greater Tucson community and in the surrounding wilderness areas. These activities provide unique opportunities for young men to learn about being on teams, collaboration, accountability leadership, facing challenges, and other elements of positive manhood. They are usually a LOT of fun too. Events include hikes, going to sporting events, campouts, life skills training, visiting men’s workplaces, service projects, and museum visits, etc. Our AO events are open to any male from the Tucson area. Challenge Weekends (CW) – Boys to Men Challenge Weekends offer extended time with a large group of committed men in a wilderness area. The are built around the idea of a modern rites of passage experience for teenage boys. The goal is to provide the boys with a weekend of fun events, challenge activities, and opportunities to consider a variety of important life choices on their journey toward manhood. There is a “line-crossing” ceremony at the end of the weekend designed to mark an intentional stepping away from childhood and in to an intentional quest for a healthy, responsible, and positive manhood.
