Sabino Canyon Training Hike
When, Where: On Saturday, February 17th, starting at 10:30, we’ll be hiking two different but connected trails in the lower Sabino Canyon Recreation Area. No tram ride will be needed for this hike. From 10:00 to 10:30 AM we’ll do gear checks, bathroom stops, safety training, and take a group pre-hike photo. You can get directions to the park at this link.
Who: We’ll be a group of somewhere between 8 and 25 males between the ages of 10 to 74. There will be a wide range of physical abilities in our group, and we will hike as a tribe, making sure no one gets too far behind or too far ahead. Any guy can attend, and everyone is encouraged to bring a friend. You and the guys you bring should be able to handle a total of three to four hours of pretty easy hiking. Most young males can handle these trails.
The Hike Details: This hike is a shorter “training hike,” and not a longer and harder “challenge hike” that will come later. On this hike we’ll warm up on a short section of flat trail out of the parking lot to meet the bottom Phoneline trailhead. Before we start up the trail we’ll do a quick check in circle and then head out.
We’ll start a long, gradual climb to a high point on the trail where we’ll see some awesome vistas, both into Sabino Canyon and out over the city of Tucson. From there we’ll take the switchbacks down to meet up with Sabino creek, and follow it to the Sabino Dam. Along the way we’ll find a shady area for a snack break. On the trail from the dam back to the visitor’s center we’ll find a spot for a brief honoring circle, the last group photo, and checking out.
This hike is a total of just under five miles round trip, and will take us 2 to 3 hours depending on our pace and how much rest/lunch/photo time we take along the way. On this outing, in addition to seeing big vistas and getting bragging rights, you’ll learn about the canyon, see the results of serious past flooding, and see a few giant saguaro cactus along the trail.
If you have questions about the hike, call Earl Hipp at: 651-252-4477.
What you’ll get: If the previous hikes are any indicator, everyone on this guy’s adventure will have a great time, meet new friends, get amazing pictures, and create some very happy memories.
If you’re interested in joining the hike: leave a message on the Boys to Men Tucson hot line (520-344-3624) with your name, your cell phone (preferred) or home phone number, the contact information for a parent or guardian, and an emergency contact phone number (and name if different from parent or guardian). Someone will get back to you soon.
WAIVER: Everyone on this outing needs to have a Boys to Men Tucson Liability Waiver on file. If you are under 18, the waiver must also be signed your Parent or Guardian. If you have a waiver on file from a previous event, you’re good to go. If you have not yet turned in a waiver, you can download it at this link: 2018 BTMT Liability Waiver. Sign it, initial the various places indicated, have it signed by a parent if you’re under 18, and then bring it with you to the event. No waiver, no go.
